SEGUIN, Texas – With the wind blowing out at Katt-Isbel Field at up to 40 mph, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs produced runs in all but two innings Saturday in 17-7 and 19-12 wins over Mississippi College.
TLU pounded out 13 extra-base hits in the doubleheader and hit six home runs. TLU pitchers, despite the windy conditions, did not allow a home run.
The Bulldogs (9-5) won all three games of the cross-divisional series with the Choctaws (6-6). TLU defeated MC on Friday by a count of 15-12.
On Saturday, TLU third baseman Jeremy Macklin (Austin/Bowie/Huston-Tillotson) set a school record for RBI in a doubleheader, with 14. He tied the school record for RBI in a single game, with eight in the first game.
In that first game, Macklin was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and the eight runs driven home. He homered twice, giving him five home runs this season. He also doubled and had a sacrifice fly.
In game two, Macklin was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and six RBI. He doubled and walked twice.
Macklin also set a new school record for RBI in a three-game series, with 18. He finished the series with 11 hits in 12 at-bats. He collected four doubles, three home runs and three walks. Macklin entered the MC series with 12 RBI; he left it with 30 RBI.
The Bulldogs amassed 33 total hits in the doubleheader against MC. Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe/Santa Fe) had three hits and four RBI in game one, and Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian) drove in four runs and scored six in the two games.
TLU shortstop Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas) went 4-for-5 on the day with seven runs scored and three stolen bases. Green’s three steals all came in game one. He now shares the single-game steal record at TLU with teammate Harvey, who notched his third career three-steal game.
Harvey and Green share the single-game steals mark with Casey Rehfeld and TLU Hall of Famer Dax Kiefer, who stole three bases in a game four different times.
The Bulldogs had five home runs in the first game. In addition to Macklin’s two shots, Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC), Andy Griffith (Loyola Beach/Riviera Kaufer/Cisco JC), and Drew Farr (Taylor/Taylor) also homered. Farr hit his seventh of the season.
TLU freshman right-hander Brad Orosey (Houston/Cypress Creek) pitched a complete game in the opener. He allowed four earned runs (seven total) and scattered five hits. He walked five and struck out three. Orosey improved to 3-0.
Logan Hull (Victoria/Memorial) went five innings in game two and recorded his first win of 2009. Hull allowed nine earned run, struck out five and walked four.
Jeremiah Steinert (Sugar Land/Dulles) entered the second game in the sixth inning with TLU clinging to a 14-12 lead. Steinert pitched 1-2/3 innings without allowing a run. He picked up his first collegiate save.
TLU returns to Katt-Isbel Field on Wednesday, March 4 with a single, 9-inning game against DeSales (Pa.). The game is set for a 2 p.m. start.
