Called to Make a Difference

There is a certain unwavering spirit at Texas Lutheran University that calls to every alumnus, student, and faculty and staff member. The call was answered in the belief that through our dedication to Texas Lutheran, we can make a difference in the world around us and specifically in the lives of the students we serve.

The Called to Make a Difference campaign was officially completed May 31, 2007.  It was a comprehensive fundraising effort for Texas Lutheran University that had been in effect since 1999. The campaign raised $52,404,867.36, becoming TLU's most successful campaign to date!  Let's take a look at a few of the components that made the TLU Called to Make a Difference Campaign thrive.
  1. The TLU Annual Fund and Annual Scholarships
    • The Annual Fund is the lifeblood of the university and helps cover additional costs not covered in the budget, such as post-season athletic events, technological enhancements to the campus and much more. A contribution to the annual fund continues the giving legacy for both current and future students of TLU.  During this campaign, the Annual Fund has raised nearly $14 million!
    • Annual Scholarships provide financial assistance for TLU students to defray the cost of tuition and fees. Tuition represents nearly three- quarters of the actual cost of a TLU education, and about 95% of our students receive some type of financial aid.

  2. The TLU Endowment
    • TLU Endowment funds are held in perpetuity by TLU and must be used in accordance with the donor’s wishes and specifications.
    • The top focus of this endowment effort is building the Scholarship endowment, ensuring that generations of students will be able to attend TLU. Endowed scholarships can be established at a minimum of $25,000, payable over a five-year period, and the scholarship will be named according to the donor’s wishes. During the CMAD campaign, 119 new scholarships were established for a total of $9.9 million raised!
    • Also included in this section are faculty endowments, which are essential for TLU to recruit and retain the outstanding faculty we are blessed with year after year.  $518,242 was raised in the CMAD campaign.
    • The Academic Programs and Equipment endowment brought $1,235,170.35 to TLU during the CMAD campaign!
    • The Library Collection endowment raised $768,579.
  3. TLU Capital Projects
    • These are the buildings and enhancements to campus that allow us to beautify the campus and accommodate our growing student body.
    • During the CMAD campaign, TLU completed the building of Alumni Park (in the footprint of Old Main). As a special remembrance of their time at TLU, alumni can purchase a brick with their name and class year listed to be laid in Alumni Park. Anyone who has attended at least one semester can have their name on a brick. What a great gift for family and friends to be immortalized on the grounds of their Alma Mater, TLU!
    • Annie V. and Hilmar R. Tschoepe Hall, home of College of Professional Studies - Education, Business and Kinesiology, was completed in the Spring of 2005. The 30,000 square foot, two-story brick facility includes 11 classrooms, three educational resource laboratories, 22 faculty offices, individual and group study areas for students, and a faculty and staff lounge. A large conference center provides modern conference facilities for on-campus meetings, and the Weeber Courtyard provides space for receptions and informal gatherings.
    • Construction of the George Kieffer Kinesiology Lab Building has been completed. The 2,200 square-foot laboratory, located adjacent to the Jones Physical Education Complex, uses state-of-the-art equipment to collect and analyze two- and three-dimensional human motion. The research and learning laboratory is one of a few stand-alone facilities built exclusively for motion analysis in the United States, and it provides TLU's undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to explore research questions and apply scientific theory.
    • The historic Fritz Homestead has been completely renovated and is now open to the public for meetings, receptions, outdoor events, etc. The Fritz Family Homestead, dating back to the 1860s when Frederick and Elizabet Fritz built what is now only a portion of the home, was moved to its present location on campus in April 2001 in preparation for future campus development.
    • Construction has begun on the nearly 10,000 square-foot AT&T Science Facility, an addition to Moody Science Hall. This facility is comprised of three levels, with the lower level housing pre-engineering and physics, level two housing biology, and level three housing chemistry. The AT&T Science Facility will make it possible for Texas Lutheran University to offer a more valuable education to its science and pre-engineering majors, as well as all other students satisfying their core curriculum. Completion of the facility is scheduled for Spring, 2008.
With this campaign completed and successful, it is time to look toward future projects, such as the planned renovations of the Fine Arts Building and the Blumberg Library.

For more than 100 years, Texas Lutheran University has made a positive difference in our world. The university's highly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff have made a profound impact on the thousands of individuals who have attended TLU since its founding in 1891. The TLU academic program is given additional strength and context by the liberating power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and has prepared students for lives of service and meaningful contribution to society.

There are more than 3,000 colleges and universities in the United States, but few take seriously a mission to educate people in heart, soul, mind, and strength. And none offer an experience quite like the one that can be found at Texas Lutheran University. The TLU experience develops the whole person, not just the intellect. At TLU, one can obtain not only a degree of their choosing, but an education for their life!

We’ve all heard the call, and over the last years we've all been answering.  Please continue to do so as we prepare for the future at Texas Lutheran University!
