Applying to Study Abroad

What are the requirements to apply?
  1. Students must have completed two semesters at TLU before studying abroad.
  2. The TLU cumulative GPA requirements vary depending upon the program, but the range is from 2.5 to 3.0. Check the respective program Web sites or with the International Education office.
  3. Good campus discipline record.

What is the deadline for applications?
The deadline to study abroad is always the semester before you want to go. For example, if you wish to study abroad in the fall semester, the application will be due to the international education office the previous spring semester.

Keep in mind that the deadline for an ISEP program is earlier than all other TLU programs. The application deadline schedule is:

Aug. 26—for students who apply for ISEP for spring semester study abroad
Oct. 1—for students who apply for all other TLU programs for spring semester study abroad

Jan. 20—for students who apply for ISEP for fall semester study abroad
March 1—for students who apply for all other TLU programs for fall semester study abroad and for all summer study abroad programs

Applications include a Dean of Students form, two to three reference forms, an essay, a transcript from all colleges/universities attended, and a TLU application for off-campus study. All forms are to be returned to the International Education office by 5 p.m. on the deadline date.

Applications can be obtained in the International Education Office.

Is there an orientation program?
Yes, and participation is required in order to study abroad. There are usually two pre-departure orientation sessions each semester. They are typically held in November and April. Students who have been accepted will be notified of the specific dates.

In addition to pre-departure orientation sessions held at TLU, there will be an orientation session at your host campus after you arrive. Be sure to check your arrival date so that you arrive in time for the orientation.

There will also be scheduled re-orientation sessions for returning study abroad students. Each spring semester, a one-hour course —"Cross-cultural Reflections" ID 214 —will be offered. This is optional for all returning study abroad students but required for those seeking the International Studies collateral major or minor.
