Department of Political
Science and Sociology

The subjects of political science and sociology are interesting to most students, dealing as they do with issues that often impact their lives. These include issues such as war and terrorism, environmental regulation, the nature and causes of violence in homes and schools, and the influence of money in political campaigns. In their desire to understand and influence public policy, more than 300 students have graduated from Texas Lutheran with degrees in political science (200+) and sociology (125+) during the past three decades.

Many political science and sociology students have become involved in student government at TLU and go on to careers in public service, including leadership in their own churches and communities. Many majors in these fields have an interest in law, and a large number of them have become attorneys, judges, legislators or legislative aides. Others have become teachers, especially at the high school level. Many have gone on to graduate school, especially in public administration, and some have earned doctorates. Several have entered into management positions in business or government organizations.

Political Science

Political science courses introduce students to concepts that help them make sense of the present and future, focusing especially on law and the institutions of government. The study of political science equips students with some of the philosophical wisdom necessary to become good leaders and active citizens.

Sociology and Criminal Justice

Sociology is the scientific study of human social life. It focuses on the forces that organize and structure society and those that engender societal change. Criminal justice is intended to prepare students for work in federal and local law enforcement, probation and corrections, by teaching them how these agencies are interrelated, the causes of crime in society and the elements of criminal law and procedure.
