Education Faculty

Anna Bergstrom, instructor, bachelor of arts in biology, the University of Texas; master of science in gifted and talented education, Texas A & M International University; and doctorate (Ph.D. to be completed December 2007) in Instructional Technology, the University of Texas.  Her areas of specialization include instructional technology, math education and science education with a special interest in the role of laboratory instruction.

For 11 years she taught math, computer science, biology, chemistry and physics in junior high and high schools.  She is a member of several professional societies and has presented papers at national, regional and state meetings.

 

Rebecca Oekerman, associate professor, bachelors of science in elementary education, Ohio University; master of arts in education, The University of Texas of the Permian Basin; doctorate (EdD) in educational psychology, Texas Tech University.  Her areas of specialization are early childhood education and early literacy.

 

Dr. Oekerman taught in public and private schools in Ohio and Texas in preschool, elementary, and middle school classrooms. She also served as the director of an early childhood program and member of a West Texas school district Board of Trustees.  Her areas of research include obesity in the early childhood profession and quality in child care settings.  She has published in various state and national journals.

Eduardo Torres, assistant professor, chair, department of education;director of field experience and student teacher supervisor; bachelor of science in education, the University of Texas at El Paso; master of science in special education and educational administration, Texas A & M University Commerce; and doctorate (Ed.D) in educational administration, Texas A & M University Commerce. His areas of specialization include bilingual education, special education, elementary education, and school administration.

Dr. Torres' teaching career has been in large inner city public schools for 30 years. He has been an elementary school teacher and has been a principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. He has also been an area superintendent for the Dallas Independent School District and most recently, he was the deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the San Antonio Independent School District. He is a member of several professional organizations. He has presented at state education conferences.

Pat Kelley Watkins, student teacher supervisor; bachelor of science from McMurry University; master of arts and mid-management certification, UT-Permian Basin; superintendent certification, Texas Woman's University.

Prof. Watkins held many educational positions in public schools, including teacher, coach and elementary school principal.  She was also an educational consultant with Region IX Education Service Center in Wichita Falls for six years before coming to Seguin as a principal.  She is active in organizations for educators and is past president of the Sunrise Rotary Club in Seguin.
