Productions
Production at TLU Dramatic Media features an innovative approach that helps students create, produce and deliver content that isn't limited by traditional models of live stage performance. Productions of established literature are complemented by world premieres of new work. Student-produced plays, independent films and emerging methods of storytelling are valued in the same manner as live, faculty-produced material. As a result, students of TLU Dramatic Media have extensive opportunities to receive hands-on experience in production, beginning in their first year. Join us for our current season, as listed below!

Sueño, by Obie Award-winning and Academy Award nominee José Rivera, is a modern adaptation of Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s classic Life is a Dream. The play follows the life of Segismundo, heir to the Spanish throne, imprisoned at birth when astrologers predicted his reign would ruin the country. With King Basilio’s reign ending, he releases Segismundo and places him on the throne. If gentle and civilized, Segismundo will be allowed to reign. If wild and barbaric, he’ll be sent back to his imprisonment and told that his brief moment of freedom and power was only a dream. Sueño asks the eternal questions posed by Calderón: What is man—angel or animal? What is honor? What is freedom? If life is a dream, who is dreaming us, and what is real?

Melancholy Play, by Blackburn Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize nominee Sarah Ruhl, is woeful in title only, for the central character Tilly’s melancholy is of an exquisite quality. Her melancholy is a magnetic, attractive force, prompting every stranger she meets to fall in love with her. One day, inexplicably, Tilly becomes happy, and thus wreaks havoc on the lives of her paramours. Frances, Tilly’s hairdresser, becomes so melancholy herself that she turns into an almond. It is up to Tilly and those in her orbit, to restore balance in their universe— by either getting Frances back—or joining her!
