What is the Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP)?

A plan to ensure:
  • Graduation.
  • Ability to take advantage of the many opportunities TLU offers.
  • Preparation for life after graduation.

The comprehensive education plan (CEP) is a process that helps students plan their years at TLU.  The CEP is more than just a planning document for it offers a recap of courses and activities, encourages future participation in on-and off-campus activities and programs, and suggests possibilities for post-college plans.  It can set the pace and tone for a student’s academic and extracurricular life.  The CEP process asks students to think about the purpose of their education and encourages them to take advantage of the many opportunities available.  Students work closely with their advisors and mentors to develop a strategy for getting the most out of their college years with an eye toward beginning a successful career or pursuing graduate or professional study.

The Value of CEP

The value lies in the process of thinking, talking and writing about the future.  Through forethought and planning, a student will be able to take advantage of a wide range of learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.  Together these experiences will enrich personal growth and intellectual development.

Steps to Accomplish the CEP

  1. Ponder the Questions to Think About.  These are questions about your skills, interests, and aspirations.
  2. Talk with your academic advisor, faculty mentor, and/or peer mentor about your CEP.  Consult with any and all of them and keep them informed as to your progress.  They all know different sides of you and have diverse areas of expertise:  avail yourself to their knowledge and ideas!
  3. Consult with other people in order to put together your CEP.  Although you have to make the ultimate decisions about your life, many people are willing to help with the process, e.g., faculty, department chairs, friends, family, Career Services, International Education Programs, employers or alumni in the working world, Student Activities, etc.
  4. Make an appointment to talk to your academic advisor, the chair or a faculty member from your major department, and minor department if you have one, to discuss specific courses and when you should plan to take them.  This is important to ensure you graduate on schedule!
  5. Your CEP is completed when you and your advisor are both satisfied with your plan. The goal should be to finish it during the fall semester of your sophomore year before registering for spring classes.
  6. Remember however, that YOU MAY CHANGE YOUR PLANS AT ANY STAGE as you develop new interests or ideas.  The CEP is fluid in nature and change is expected as you complete courses, add new activities, or maybe even change directions altogether!
